“A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercise, I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind.”
— Thomas Jefferson
Through the activities of hunting and fishing, citizens learn to steward nature and govern themselves. They inspire boldness, enterprise, and independence. These sports, which were so fundamental to our country’s growth, are sadly jeopardized by radical groups who seek to restrict the citizen’s right to use and enjoy America’s natural resources.
In keeping with its liberal arts education, in which the cultivation of virtue, study of history, and understanding the natural world are essential parts, Hillsdale College is committed to educating Americans nationwide about hunting and fishing. To that end, Hillsdale has established the Nimrod Education Center.
Hillsdale College students are invited to apply for the Drummond Family Silver Fellowship. This competitive fellowship is open to undergraduate students of all majors who have experience with, or a significant interest in, hunting and fishing. Students earn scholarships for their participation.
Each semester, the Nimrod Education Center hosts prominent voices in the outdoor sports world to speak to Hillsdale College students, faculty, and friends.
The Nimrod Education Center offers educational hunting and fishing trips, which combine practical sporting experience with lectures from Hillsdale professors on various themes. Hunt alongside Hillsdale College students and staff in some of the greatest sporting habitats America has to offer!
Wildlife conservation is a vital means for ensuring that all Americans can enjoy hunting and fishing. After many wildlife species significantly dwindled during the 1900s, hunters and anglers worked to create legislation to help conservation efforts. Due to this foresight and commitment, game species and sport fisheries thrive today for the benefit of American citizens.
Animals like deer, wood ducks, and wild turkeys that once were nearly eliminated are now common. Anglers continue to fund habitat restoration for salmon and other species in the Great Lakes and across America. The Nimrod Education Center helps spread this urgent message, teaching citizens how they can support conservation efforts for the sake of hunting and fishing.
